How to Redraw the Thumb Zone for Betting Screens

Nobody at a bus stop is admiring your grid. They want a market, a price and a tap, and a search for 1xbet free bets is often what brings them to the page in the first place. Where the Original Map Came From

Steven Hoober's 2013 field study logged 1,333 observations of people using phones on streets, in cafes, at bus stops. Of those, 780 were touching the screen rather than only holding it, and that group split 49% one-handed, 36% cradled in one hand and tapped with the other, 15% two-thumbed.

Solid numbers. They just aren't where the arc came from.

The reach overlays were a separate exercise. Hoober traced them from photographs of colleagues, using a coarse reach estimate from an informal office sample, with the heat-map idea borrowed from Josh Clark. The street observations tell you how people grip a phone. They say nothing about how far a thumb travels.

The largest handset anywhere in that data set was a 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2. Every bet slip you've shipped since renders on more glass than Hoober ever watched anyone hold.


Why the Author Called It a Lie

By 2017 Hoober had published a follow-up that reprints the famous chart under a caption calling it incorrect. In the comments on his own 2013 piece he went further, describing the drawings as a lie and asking readers to ignore them.

His later figures redraw the picture.

  • 75% touch the screen with one thumb only
  • Fewer than 50% hold the phone in one hand
  • 36% cradle, using the second hand for reach and stability
  • 10% hold in one hand and tap with a finger of the other

Then the finding that undoes the heat map. People don't work corner to corner. They scroll content into the middle and tap it there, because that's where reading and tapping both go best.

Which turns the old instruction upside down. The market list, the price and the confirm action belong in the middle band, with tabs and section routes along the top and bottom edges. Bottom bars still work for navigation, though the button carrying the decision has no business down there.


Measure in Viewport Pixels, Not Inches

Model names will mislead you. Anyone arriving through a 1xbet apk download lands in a native shell whose safe-area insets redraw the usable box before your CSS gets a say.

Two phones from the same year and family hand your stylesheet different canvases. The standard iPhone 16 runs 1179 by 2556 at a pixel ratio of 3, so your layout gets 393 by 852. The 16 Pro gives you 402 by 874, nine more pixels of width for your coupon.

So before you sketch anything, work through this.

  • Pull the CSS viewport for the three devices your analytics report, not the three sitting on your desk

  • Then do it while walking, because that's where a live market gets tapped

Getting placement right still leaves the tap itself, which was never precise. Hoober's caution applies before any figure below, since pixel rules drift by a fifth either way on real glass while hands get measured in millimeters.

Accuracy drops toward the edges

Treat 24px as the compliance floor and the millimeter figures as the design target for anything that adjusts a stake or confirms a selection. Odds cells are the easy win, since the whole row can absorb the tap instead of the number inside it. A stake stepper pinned hard right sits in the worst accuracy zone on the glass.


Design the Grip Change Into the Flow

Nobody holds a phone one way for a whole session. They cradle it to read a market list, drop to one hand for a scroll, bring the second hand in to type a stake. No single step in the flow should depend on one grip being held throughout.

Run the flow one-handed on the largest phone in your traffic and note every point where you have to shuffle the handset. Each shuffle is a moment where a price can move under an idle thumb. Check what sits beneath that thumb on a long scroll too, since a stray tap costs someone a selection they never chose.

Foldables will need their own map, and the reachability work on those is still thin.
